Santa Clara Valley Wrestling Association - SCVWA

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is The Santa Clara Valley Wrestling Association - SCVWA?

SCVWA is a part of USA Wrestling California and USA Wrestling California is a part of the National Governing Body of USA Wrestling.  The main goal of USA Wrestling is to build Olympic champions and a big part of that is having a strong pipeline to develop talent.  To that end, each state, including California has a state USA Wrestling Association.  Because California is so large, it’s broken down into 18 associations!  The Santa Clara Valley Wrestling Association is one of these 18 associations.  The map at the bottom of this FAQ sheet visually breaks down how the associations are separated.

  2. Where is the best place to find fall and spring schedules for when tournaments will take place?  If not CaliWrestling.com then California USA Wrestling

  3. Are the tournaments wrestled in folkstyle, freestyle or greco?  In the fall, the tournaments are wrestled in the folkstyle (or sometimes called scholastic) style.  In the spring the tournaments include both freestyle and greco divisions.

  4. Where is the best place to find the registration links for SCVWA events? Caliwrestling.com is the best place to find the registration links.  They are usually set up a week or so before the event.

  5. Who are the folks running these events?

Almost all of the individuals you see running these events are volunteers.  They are people who love wrestling, believe in its ability to positively shape an individual, and want to give back.  These are community building events so everyone is encouraged to pitch in.  Don’t be shy.  Pull a chair up at a table and learn how to run the clock.  There are also opportunities to learn how to officiate.  Basically just look for needs and help fill them, but above all, be kind, patient and thankful to all of the volunteers.

  6. Should I register ahead of time?  Can I register at the door?  To avoid a long line the morning of the event it’s best to register ahead of time so you can go straight to the weigh-in line when you arrive.  However, you CAN register at the door if you need to.

  7. What do I need to bring to registration and / or the weigh-in line? It’s important that you bring a copy of your USA Wrestling card with you.  Click here to learn how to print your card.  The barcode on each card can be easily scanned and it helps lines move much faster.

  8. What time do weigh-ins usually start? Weigh-ins usually run from 7:30-8:30am

  9. What time do the matches start? After everyone weighs-in, the tournament directors will put the tournament together.  This can take 1-1.5 hours to complete.  During this time, there will be a technique clinic from 9:00-10:00am.  Matches start at approximately 10:00am.

  10. Why is the tournament set up in round robin format instead of brackets?

The round robin format allows wrestlers to weigh in at their walking around weight.  In other words, wrestlers don’t need to worry about weighing in at a specific weight.  They simply need to step on the scale.  Once everyone weighs in, tournament directors match up athletes in the same age division with other athletes around the same weight.  Athletes will get a chance to wrestle all of the wrestlers in their group no matter what the outcome of each match.  This setup is less stressful and more fun for the wrestlers.  It also maximizes mat time for all athletes.

  11. Once the tournament starts, how do wrestlers know when their matches are up?

  12. SCVWA events use USA Bracketing
